The Indian government's Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan recommends a minimum of 4 antenatal visits — in the first trimester, at 14–26 weeks, at 28–34 weeks, and at 36 weeks onwards. However, for high-risk pregnancies (GDM, HTN, twins, or prior complications), fortnightly or monthly visits are standard clinical practice.
TIFA (Targeted Imaging for Fetal Anomalies) is a detailed anatomy ultrasound typically performed between 18–22 weeks of pregnancy. It evaluates fetal organ development including the heart, brain, spine, kidneys, and limbs. This window is the optimal time for detection of major structural anomalies. Missing this window significantly limits the ability to identify and counsel about certain conditions.
Seek immediate care for: vaginal bleeding at any stage, severe headache with visual disturbance (blurring or flashing lights), sudden swelling of face/hands/feet, decreased or absent fetal movements after 28 weeks, leaking of fluid from the vagina, severe abdominal pain, or high fever. These can indicate placenta previa, pre-eclampsia, PPROM, or other emergencies that require urgent evaluation.
